The worrying drought forces the Municipality of Turin to think of an extreme option, that of turning off the fountains. This was announced by the councilor for maintenance Francesco Tresso and the councilor for ecological transition Chiara Foglietta, during a press conference called to present the redevelopment of the neighborhoods. “Today we have an appointment with the offices to evaluate the shutdown,” explained Tresso. The final decision could mature as early as this week. The choice, the two underlined, is not so much political as it is more technical: «Keeping them off and not working could be worse, given that in many of these the reactivation risks being very problematic. In addition to this, the biological state of water systems could be compromised. Without considering all the risks associated with acts of vandalism, which multiply when the fountains are off ».
So in the next few days a survey will be done to understand which ones can be closed painlessly. There are currently 40 active and functioning fountains in the city. The others are already off or have other problems. It must be said that in any case these plants do not waste water: the water resources are recovered and put back into circulation. «But a possible shutdown would like to be a signal. Seeing a closed fountain would make you think. Even if there is no issue of waste, the absolutely extraordinary drought situation requires us to think about symbolic measures too ». Unlike these plants, no one is currently thinking about closing the torets: “Even the latter do not waste water, but in addition they have a social value that we think it is necessary to always keep active, What to do in the meantime to put your hand to the situation? “On the side of citizens, it is essential to implement virtuous behavior. Limiting the domestic consumption of water should be a usual practice ”, the two councilors reiterated. Also during the day, the leaders of Smat said that the losses in the network amounted to about 22%. But the water company explained that it is putting in place an investment of 45 million euros to replace the more than 300,000 meters in the Turin area in order to have real-time updated monitoring of waste.
