Government, Opposition need to work together

By Zahid Rabbani

The PTI and PDM must shun the stubborn attitude that is keeping them apart and affecting the poor citizens. Please be kind enough not to let your dear homeland become a land of sighs and moans. Whatever you are sowing is turning into the harvest of sighs.

For years, we have seen political leaders and parties publicize the narrative that the country is experiencing a challenging economic, internal security, and diplomatic situation.

Our leaders should pursue a course of action that will lead them to success as many other nations in the world have reached their desired destination by following the objectives. However, in Pakistan, they failed to bear fruit as we have a history of toppling governments, discontinuing policies, and abandoning plans midway.

The current socio-economic situation of the country is alarming and reportedly raising the risk of an eventual default. However, government officials claim to deny this. Every day we come across reports of the worsening economic crisis and the need to reform our policies.

For a reality check, if we visit the length and breadth of our unfortunate homeland, a deafening noise of groans would rush into our ears from every nook and corner, where human beings are suffering not to talk about the flood victims having a miserable life. There is none to apprehend the nature of their sufferings except the army men.

The rising inflation coupled with the ongoing political turmoil is increasing frustration among the masses. The need of the hour is for all stakeholders to put aside their differences and sit together to devise a policy framework for the future of the country.

Considering that all political parties claim to have experts in different fields, they should come forward with the best experts to form economic and social strategies, which should remain in place despite regime changes.

The newly formed strategies and all major amendments must have the stamp of parliamentary consensus. It is not too late; the federal government and the opposition must acknowledge the benefits of a national dialogue and work cooperatively to steer the country out of a major crisis to benefit the underprivileged.

Apart from the grief-stricken masses, there are spirited people like politicians who are enjoying every moment of their lives. They have had everything of the land in their grasp. Thus, in their lives, words such as pain and anguish do not disturb them rather they boast of their wealth and comfort as a kind of accomplishment.

The effect of such thinking is they treat other people as worthless insects. It is, however, painful that the more riches our politicians are gathering, the ruder they are becoming day by day.

All that exists in the state belongs to them for they are influential and resourceful; if anyone from the sidelines dares step into their world, they give such treatment to him so that others like him think twice before attempting.

Why there are no holds barred on our political class for a break from its pursuit of accumulating wealth relentlessly? Perhaps, in this era of quick success, the definition of insatiability appears altered and now people in the political world across the developed nations term it essential for survival in the cutthroat contest of getting power.

A country prospers only when the political class takes care of the people on the margins. It is therefore dismaying that our political elite is wandering under the spell of more and more.

Our politicians have given their feelings to the longing for riches. Now they have a chain of gold around their necks, which displays their worldly attainment. Pakistan’s economy will not be on the right track until our politicians are fair.
