Marriyum Aurangzeb excels in strategic thinking

Marriyum Aurangzeb is a renowned politician from Pakistan Muslim League (N) and is a member of the National Assembly. She is presently Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting.

She has held several strategic portfolios in planning and Development for Environmental Conservation and has been pivotal in the ratification of International Agreements and pursued with great passion the implementation of Millennium Development Goals in Pakistan.

Famous globally for pioneering the first Sustainable Development Goals established in the National Assembly, the first of its kind in the world, Marriyum excels in strategic thinking and planning doing result-oriented professional work in the Environment and Development sector.

She has dedicated her professional career to pursuing, with great success, the conservation and environmental agenda in Pakistan with a tenure spanning a decade with the globally renowned World Wildlife Fund for Nature-Pakistan (WWF-Pakistan).

Working with WWF-Pakistan, she has held a diverse portfolio of responsibilities, including spearheading Global Campaigns, and has been instrumental in formulating key environmental and social developmental policies at the Global, Regional, and National levels.

Her responsibilities at WWF-Pakistan included work planning, networking and lobbying, advocacy, environmental education, media liaison for the environment, fundraising for financial sustainability, and liaison and coordination with donor agencies, stakeholders, and partner organizations ranging from Policy to all the stages of Program Development and Project Management.

She worked as a Coordinator of Awareness and Communication at the internationally and nationally acclaimed Pakistan Wetlands Program of WWF-Pakistan before joining the corporate relation department of Pakistan.

She has a strong political pedigree and hails from a noted political family from Rawalpindi. Being the granddaughter of Raja Kala Khan, a Member Legislative Assembly of Pakistan’s first constituent Assembly, her mother and maternal aunt have remained at the forefront of leading struggles for democratic restoration and constitutional rights in Pakistan for over 3 decades.

Her mother, Begum Tahira Augranzeb is a two-time member of the National Assembly and Begum Najma Hameed, her maternal aunt has served as a Provincial Minister, Member of the Provincial Assembly and is now completing her second term as Senator.

Marriyum, from a very young age, developed a political understanding and acumen with political activism as a natural mechanism. She started assisting her mother in constituency work while taking an active part in the restoration struggle during the era of political turmoil in Pakistan.

She started her political career as a member National Assembly in 2013, she took a lead role in assisting the Honorable Speaker to design and implement his reforms agenda in the working of the National Assembly and its Secretariat.

She led the team to write the 4-year Strategic Plan of the National Assembly, devised the unprecedented HR policy to drive efficiency in the National Assembly, and is a driving force for the e-Parliament, a project to modernize the working of the House.

She initiated the Parliamentary Studies Program in 35 Universities across Pakistan; established Legislative Drafting Council for Parliamentarians and IT and communication plan for the Parliament. In addition, as Convener of the SDGs Taskforce, she developed the blueprint for the Parliamentary Oversight reforms-based agenda.

In view of her achievements in the corporate sector and political administration, the Prime Minister of Pakistan appointed Marriyum as the Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Interior and Narcotic Control. Ms. Marriyum was the first woman to be appointed to this post.

Her performance for the revival of the film industry, TV, radio, and journalists’ welfare has been widely acknowledged.

Marriyum has passion, commitment robust experience, and keen intellect that add great substance to Pakistan’s political discourse and enables positive momentum to the national policies that drive the change necessary to serve the best interest of the people of Pakistan.
